Iron slag is chromium-containing waste slag produced when chromium-containing ferroalloys are smelted by pyrometallurgy. At present, it is mainly produced when high-carbon ferrochrome is smelted by submerged arc furnace method.

The main components of ferrochrome slag are chromium trioxide, silicon oxide, magnesium oxide, aluminum oxide, calcium oxide and iron oxide.

Since high-carbon ferrochrome is smelted with slag, chromium ore only contains 30%-50% chromium oxide, so other components of the ore are discharged out of the furnace in the form of slag and molten iron to form ferrochrome slag during the smelting process. At present, there are two methods of slag extraction in China: dry slag method and water slag method. The dry slag method will form large pieces of dry slag, and the water slag method will form 1-20mm granular slag after the water quenching process.
